While the M3/M4 G80 definitely dropped the ball in the front end looks department when compared to it’s F80 older sibling, I admit it’s starting to grow on me. Like a dog grows into its ears, the G80 has split the room in half in terms of aesthetics but I think we can all agree the performance can’t be ignored. So like you, we were excited to see just how much we could get out of the G80, but we just had to wait for our VR Tuned Tuning Box V2 to arrive from Germany.

Once we had hardware in hand, we drained the fuel and ensured we had consistent fuel as we were aiming for the moon initially. However, after this completely factory G80 put down 503hp and 479ftlbs of torque, we thought we didn’t have much room to grow, but we were wrong.

The 3.0L Twin-Turbo inline-6 S58 that lives in the engine bay of the M3 and M4 G80 was just as stout, if not more so than the B58 it replaced. While the highest numbers we were able to draw out of the stock turbos and this extremely reliable engine will remain top secret, we can proudly say our VR Tuned Tuning Box was able to achieve a peak of 640hp and 559ftlbs of torque while maintaining safe ignition timing and without increasing knock to a dangerous point. Additionally, due to the plug and play nature of the VR Tuned Tuning box, you can gain up to 137hp and 80ftlbs of torque and may even be able to maintain your factory warranty, depending on your vehicle’s point of failure and the dealership which services it.

Unlike more invasive tuning methods, we were able to extract this power from the S58 without modifying the ECU’s Timing and Fuel tables directly. That is to say, to the naked eye, the ECU was untouched. However, German engineering, American ingenuity, and some basic EFI logic allow our tuning box to modify the signals sent from the factory sensors to the ECU and allow the ECU to make adjustments based on parameters initially defined by Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft (that’s what BMW stands for).

While the new BMW Engine Computers do have the ability to datalog to identify issues or anomalies in a vehicles performance that would surely reveal ECU tampering, since the VR Tuned Tuning Box is plug and play and can be uninstalled without a trace, it’s safe to say uninstalling the Tuning Box and unplugging the battery for about 10 minutes should be enough to lose any datalogs and allow you to drive to your service center as stock as the day it left the plant. This of course, is just theory and not instruction.

So if you’re interested in gaining horsepower, throttle response, and increasing those much sought-after burbles from your exhaust without completely forfeiting your warranty by opening the ECU, look no further than VR Tuned.

In 2022, car enthusiasts all over the United States were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Nissan Z. In the new Z, not 400Z, it seems Nissan answered all of our prayers. Equipped with a 3.0L VR30DDTT Twin Turbo V6 and a 6 speed FS6R31 manual transmission, the new Z34 (Kouki Z34) seemed to fill all the gaps Nissan left in the Zenki Z34 and R35 that left true drivers wanting more. With a power output at an even 400hp (298kw; 406ps) and 350 ftlbs (475 N-m 48 kg-m) of torque, the new Z34 was unlike any of its predecessors and a breath of fresh air in the middle of the ‘Sports Car Electrification Movement’. Nissan then broke some hearts, mine included, when they announced the 420hp, 384ftlb Z34 Nismo would be equipped with a rebadged Mercedes 9G-Tronic automatic transmission manufactured under Jatco as the JR913E and that there would be no manual option for the Nismo Z. Their reasoning: Even with more power, the automatic sport model would be faster in the ¼ mile than a manual Nismo, and they feared consumers would care.

Fast forward to release day, and the reasonably priced Nissan Z saw dealer markups of over $70,000 over MSRP on what could be Nissan’s final true sports car. Somehow, clout and fear of missing out beat common sense and they sold like hotcakes. So much so, that as of the writing of this article, the least expensive USED Nissan Z on the market is being offered at $7,000 above NEW MSRP. Now to bring it all into perspective, if you were an early buyer of a Nissan Z, you’re punching in Audi RS5 Coupe, BMW M4 Competition xDrive, and C8 Corvette territory price-wise, except you likely have cloth seats, less power, and are a good deal slower from 0-60 than your newly priced out competition… and the EFI scientist here at Vivid Racing just can’t let you go out like that.

While we have options for your interior woes, and styling upgrades that make the car look the part of the markup, we were focused on two things and two things only: horsepower and torque… and drivability (I’m aware that’s three things). When this Two-tone Ikazuchi Yellow Tricoat / Super Black Kouki Z34 rolled into our dyno lab, we were impressed. It put down an underrated 405hp and 475ftlbs of torque through the automatic transmission, which was more than we all expected. When it comes to turning the sports car, Porsche Cayenne S into an off-road beast, our very own Ryan McFarlin led by example with his latest upgrades. For his luxury SUV, Ryan upgraded it’s suspensions, wheels, tires and more, and as seen in pictures below which were shot by Derius Aguirre, the upgrades turned the ride into a powerful off-roading machine. If you thought that the installation was done seamlessly, Ryan partnered with the one and only Marzocchi Imports, a brand known for offering high-quality import repair and maintenance services across Gilbert, Arizona, which is why the installation job looks outstanding in the photos below.

For starters, Ryan’s Porsche Cayenne S was lifted of the ground using Eurowise 3 inch Lift Kit, and this ride’s suspension upgrade didn’t end there, as it also had off-road tested Control arms installed for better performance and steering. Apart from steering and handling, the other important upgrade for off-road vehicles is light, so Ryan’s Porsche had a Eurowise Bolt On Light Bar installed as well as Eurowise’s NEW Cayenne 2011-2017 modular roof rack which was modified for lights by Lex Offroad in Mesa.

A vehicle wouldn’t be off-road ready without the proper wheels and tires and Ryan used our very own VR Forged Porsche Cayenne Overland 1pc Monoblock Wheels which guarantees a comfortable ride, attractive appearance and delivers impressive performance. The 2nd Gen. Ford Raptor is an amazing platform that comes stock with some of the most capable parts you can have on an off-road truck right off the lot. This truck is not only well equipped with some superb Fox Suspension, Rigid Lighting, and 35″ tires but houses the Ecoboost D35 Twin-Turbo High-Output V6 potential powerplant of an engine. I say potential powerplant because some enthusiasts find this Raptor to be missing a little giddy-up. While the second-generation Raptor stomps the capabilities of it’s spawn, the first-generation Raptor, there is still something to be desired from Ford’s Off-Road Flagship.

Many companies, such as Hennessy Performance have taken this Raptor to new levels. They introduced their 6×6 Ford Velociraptor, built for Post Melone, that opened up huge opportunities for this truck. We won’t be taking this truck to that level, but we will be installing some budget friendly upgrades that you will instantly be able to feel on your Ford Raptor.

We first wanted to get started with some stock, baseline dyno runs to get a gauge of where this Raptor would be at on our Mustang Dyno before installing one of our upgrades. We ran this truck on 91 octane and were able to get a baseline of: 362 WHP/440 FT/TQ

Mind you, this is our Mustang Dyno and the horsepower output may differ amongst different dynos. But for this occasion, we are using 362 WHP as our stock horsepower before making any modifications.

For this Raptor project we will be installing four simple upgrades.

To start off the project, we are installing our VR Performance Intercooler that vastly improves the performance of the Ford Raptor and F150 trucks with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. Being that the 3.5L is turbocharged, upgrading the intercoolers on these vehicles is an extremely important if you want to get the most performance.

Why is that?

As air goes through the turbocharger and compresses, it gets hot very fast. This increase in air temperature causes the oxygen density to drop, resulting in a loss of performance. By replacing the factory OEM intercooler with a larger and more efficient intercooler, the warm charge air becomes much denser and oxygen rich, resulting in more power.

The Factory OEM intercooler on the Raptor and F150 is located behind the front bumper in a location that does not allow adequate air flow. This coupled with its small core size makes it highly susceptible to heat soak, especially when pushing the vehicle hard or just driving in hot environments. The Vivid Racing Intercooler Upgrade kit fixes this by replacing the factory OEM intercooler and relocating it behind the grille with a highly efficient bar and plate aluminum intercooler. Locating the intercooler behind the grille provides not only improved air flow but room for an intercooler core that is over 55% larger than stock.

The Vivid Racing Upgraded Intercooler has integrated aluminum high volume end tanks compared to the OEM intercooler, which uses plastic end tanks.  The aluminum end tanks are designed to improve air flow and help dissipate heat more efficiently.  Each kit comes with mounting brackets and aluminum intercooler piping that has been powder coated black for sleek and durable finish. The factory electronic blow-off valve is retained and kept as a fully closed loop system to keep you going in any condition. The kit also includes all necessary hardware and couplers for a clean installation.

This upgrade is a must have for Ford Raptor and F150 owners who want the most out of their truck or plan to run aftermarket bumpers and accessories as some of these modifications reduce air flow and/or require the factory intercooler to be moved. This intercooler fits beautifully behind the established grille on the Raptor making this not so much a sleeper upgrade if someone knows what their looking for!

For our upgrade we will be installing the VR Performance Cold Air Intake for the Ford Raptor.

A cold air intake kit for the Ford F-150 2.7L or 3.5L EcoBoost is one of the first upgrades you should do to your truck.  The twin turbocharged engine that powers the F-150 and the Raptor will benefit from the improved intake design giving you an overall better driving experience.  The VR Performance cold air intake kit gives your EcoBoost better throttle response, allows the turbochargers to spool up quicker, as well as increase torque along with horsepower throughout the entire RPM range.  As you go through the 10 speed transmission, you will hear the turbochargers spool up as they take in a much larger volume of air.  When the driver is not heavy on the throttle, you can even expect a slight improvement to your MPG.  As tested on a stock 2018 Ford Raptor running 91 octane while using our Mustang Dynamometer, the intake made a peak gain of 10 rear wheel horsepower (rwhp) while maintaining a midrange of 12rwhp.  Torque jumped up 20ft/lbs over stock giving you more power off the line and when you need it most!

Vivid Racing’s intake design and manufacturing is all done here in the USA.  The custom high flow cone filter has a large diameter flange taking in air from 360 degrees around. The box design has been engineered to integrate with the factory air snorkel.  The air filter is sealed off from hot engine air with a rubber gasket that is mounted to the one piece box.  Connecting the air filter to the two turbochargers is a one piece, roto molded intake tube that splits off with a clean seamless merge.  With this design, the VR intake tube flows over 100% more air than the stock intake tube.  The intake is finished off with an integrated sensor mount, Vivid Racing silicone couplers, and required hose clamps.

Why Stock Intake is Weak:

A factory intake box can have restrictions from the stock air filter and intake tubes. Looking at the stock intake of the Ford F-150 EcoBoost, you will notice the corrugated tubes that connect the hard piping to the filter box.  This design can cause turbulence to the air flow.  When the air flow is disrupted, this affects performance as the air speed is slowed down.  While air flow is very important, so is the amount of air that can be sucked into the turbochargers compressors.  The stock intake features a flat panel filter design which is common in most vehicles.  These paper air filters are non-reusable and do not have the best flow or surface area needed to gain performance.

This is a beautiful plug-n-play cold air intake that will aid in some big horsepower gains on this Raptor!

For our next piece in this project, we will be installing the VR Performance – Blow Off Valve Adapter.
This new BOV adapter allows the turbo system to vent 100% out to the atmosphere the unused charge air instead of recirculating it back into the intake system. With a standard bypass valve, air going back into the intake can be turbulent or cause compressor surge slowing the turbo spool up. One of the more popular reasons to have a 100% vent to atmosphere setup is that awesome turbo whoosh sound. The black anodized billet aluminum piece easily installs between the charge pipe and factory bypass valve. VR’s BOV Adapter comes with all necessary hardware for an easy install making for a great upgrade. This little guy improves turbo performance and is a no-brainer for this project!

Now I said this would be THREE simple upgrades, but this last one truly does the heavy lifting when taking it to the next level. The VR Tuned – ECU Flash Tune for the Ford Raptor.

There is no doubt that the Porsche 997 GT3 is a beauty and a beast straight from the factory. Even so, a fresh set of wheels can really elevate this car’s unique DNA and set it apart from the pack. Our customer Todd Nall (IG: @blackhorseturbo) was looking for a fresh wheel setup for his own 997 GT3 and opted for custom VR Forged D03 wheels in a stunning Satin Bronze finish. The bronze color really contrasts the bright Guards Red Porsche paint beautifully and gives it that track-inspired feel.

The D03 VR Forged monoblock wheel features a one-piece forged construction that showcases a sultry, thin-spoke design with our signature V accent around the lug pattern. The detailed machine work near the center of the wheel draws your eye and turns it outward to the elegance of the slender spoke design. These lightweight forged wheels were manufactured using a 10,000-ton press, so you can rely on them to be incredibly strong for those more spirited driving events. These custom forged wheels have the knurling done on the bead seats so you won’t experience any issues with spinning tires on the rim.

We crafted custom 19-inch D03 wheels for Todd: 19×8.5 +45mm (9.5 kg or 20.9 lbs) at the front and 19×12 +63mm (11 kg or 24.2 lbs) at the rear. We also made him 18×12 (10 kg or 22.0 lbs) rear wheels for his drag tires for when he is competing in half-mile or roll racing events. The overall weight savings is a really good amount when you compare it to the OEM 19-inch wheels on the Porsche GT3, and that certainly helps a lot too. For reference, the stock wheels on the Porsche 997 GT3 are 19×8.5 (24 lbs. 5 oz.) and 19×12 (30 lbs 13 oz.). This wheel is available in our shop in Gunmetal, Matte Black, and Satin Bronze finishes.

And if you look closely at the D03 wheels on his 997 GT3, you’ll notice we engraved the word “BlackHorseTurbo” on it for Todd. That has been his nickname for years in the Porsche world dating all the way back to 2007. Black Horse is the neighborhood he lived in in Texas and “turbo” comes from him having owned a 996 Turbo. “Is the BMW i8 a supercar?” This questions is as old as the i8 itself. Upon its public reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013, consumers were sure BMW just built the next legend.

However, in August 2014, American enthusiasts were left wanting more… power. While the design rivals that of some of the most exclusive supercars, when it came to functionality BMW preferred efficiency over power. So in short, the answer really depends on your definition of a supercar. According to the Vivid Racing Multilingual Dictionary, the BMW i8 is not a supercar, but no worries, we managed to fix that.

While the BMW i8 is undeniably an impressive hybrid, it does come with its own list of imperfections, and its turbocharged 1.5 liter 3-cylinder engine is not one of them surprisingly. From the factory, this car produces over 120 horsepower per cylinder and over 420 ftlbs of torque. The hybrid system ensures you get off the line efficiently and save gas when you’re not giving it the beans. However, after a few rips and some track work, it was clear we needed to pull just a little bit more out of i8.

Our tuning process for the i8 is tried and true and simple. We adjust critical parameters including air/fuel ratios, ignition timing, throttle limitations, rev limits, speed limits, and various others (including upping the boost), enabling the mighty 3 cylinder’s bite to match its bark. The resulting VRTuned flashing not only increases horsepower and torque, but it also leads to an improved driving experience, characterized by enhanced throttle response and overall smoother transient throttle performance. Of course, in typical VR fashion we opted for the Pops and Bangs for a little added spice and what we’ll call our “fourth tail light”, and the results were, to say the least, super.

The advantages and performance gains from our tune alone are quite remarkable. We were able to blow past the 400hp mark by gaining over 43 whp and increasing the already exhilarating torque value by 58 ftlbs. Now this BMW i8 has officially gained the VR stamp of approval as a legitimate Supercar.

Later on, we added a little Meisterschaft titanium to the rear, a K&N drop in air filter, and closed the fender gap around our VR Forged exclusive wheels with D2 Racing Coilovers and created the Ultimate i8, but those numbers are top secret. The 2023 Z is a coupe that is powered by a 400-hp twin turbocharged V-6 engine, that much power deserves to be heard and felt when you are driving it. This car has incredible handling and outstanding acceleration, which is why the Pennsylvania-based performance products manufacturer, AWE Tuning, took interest on the ride and manufactured one of the best exhaust option for it. You know what? You shouldn’t just take our word for it, check the video below to hear and see it for yourself

While purists, myself included, will always prefer three pedals to two, I will be the first to admit that since it’s 2003 debut, Volkswagen Auto Group’s Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) or Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) was a gamechanger. A quick google search would hail countless pages of noise samples, roll races, and technical ins-and-outs, but simply put… it’s fast… but it could be faster.

That being said, we were hyped to learn that the third generation Audi S3 would not only feature the 300hp 2.0 liter TFSI inline four cylinder engine, but it would also be paired with a fast-shifting Direct Shift Gearbox. A sure recipe for success, Audi kept this power combo together for 4 model years, giving us the chance to really test the limits of the S3.

For starters, 300hp and 281ftlbs of torque is more than enough to get a skilled driver from 0-60 in just 4.8 seconds utilizing lightning fast shifts at a 6800rpm redline that keeps you pinned under what is one of the most impressive factory torque curves in its class! Holding strong from 1800-5500rpms and five crispy shifts later, you’ll find the factory limiter hard set at 155mph, but not before passing the ¼ mile performance benchmark in about 13.3 seconds. All of this, by the way, was done on the factory 225/40 street compound tires. To say this platform is impressive is the understatement of the century, but like every car that crests the white and grey Vivid Racing dyno lab doors, it could be faster.

Our first issue with the Audi S3 was the same issue we run into with almost all OEM’s, so we addressed it immediately. The factory overrun fuel cut delay produces some happy exhaust burbles, but they serve as no replacement for response. A little acceleration enrichment management and throttle mapping saw our otherwise factory S3 immediately come alive, completely eliminating the pedal delay that plagues so many automatic transmission vehicles. From there, we spent a little time on our timing and fueling strategies, even delaying that overrun fuel cut even more for a few fireworks out the tail pipe, before ending with a safe, but aggressive 368 hp and 357 ftlbs of torque. Our new found 20% increase in horsepower and 26% increase in torque was amazing, but we knew something was missing. So, we disabled the speed limiter, and it was impressive, but still not perfect yet. So we looked to the transmission.

From the factory, the DQ250 is one of the most capable modern transmissions in the sport compact game, but unlike our beloved T56’s and R154’s, the DQ250’s brawn depends less on it’s hardware and more on its software. In regular trim, Audi designed this transmission for the common person. It has been refined to focus less on violent acceleration and more on comfort, emissions, and longevity, but like most things, the OEM’s took this refinement to the extreme, effectively caging the DQ250’s spirit in the name of normality. Luckily, here at VR Tuned, we have developed a flash that allows you to harness every bit of power and translate it seamlessly to whatever road surface you choose.

The DSG is similar to your automatic and manual transmissions in that it translates engine torque to the wheels, but the way it does it would require its own article. In short, we were able to extend shift points, quicken the clutch engagement, and modify a few parameters to ensure efficient repeatable launches with our higher power levels. Most importantly, nothing we did to our transmission computer affected our engine computer. This means there were no check engine lights, no need to re-tune our ECU, and we had nailed the direct plug-and-play simplicity we have grown to enjoy across all platforms with our VR Tuned products.

The recent Toyota A91 Supra to be completely transformed belongs to Richard Operana, a car enthusiast who knew his needs and didn’t stop until he met them. Mr Richard bought new wheels,  and center caps from our shop and the results have been nothing short of astonishing. Let’s be Frank. Your average Aston Martin owner is anything but average. Our cars are often times extensions of ourselves, and put simply, the V12 Vanquish is a masterpiece of automotive engineering and design.

The Vanquish is regarded as art on wheels. It’s simplicity with a dash of seductive elegance is the recipe for a timeless design. The interior is comprised of the finest, handcrafted materials that envelop you in a cockpit of comfort and style. Enter, the 5.9 liter Aston Martin V-12. To take the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish nearer to perfection, the team here at Vivid Racing made a few changes. It started with establishing a baseline and truly testing the limits of the V12, and to our pleasant surprise, it managed to put down 575hp and 465ft/lbs of torque on 91 octane in the arid Arizona heat. However, we knew Aston Martin had left a little bit of room for improvement, and we love improvement. After brunch at the VE table, an otherwise completely factory V12 found an additional 25hp and 25ft/lbs of torque, but that wasn’t all. With our modified ignition mapping and refinement of the throttle response, this V12 Vanquish felt like a completely different beast. Unfortunately, though, this is as far as we were able to get on our initial session. If you want to pull every last ounce of potential out of your V12 and our VR Tuned Flash Tune, we highly recommend the upgrade to the Quicksilver Sports Manifolds and Race-Catalysts paired with Quicksilver’s Titan Supersport Exhaust System… but only when you think you can handle it.

The Audi R8 will forever be renowned as the flagship of the German automaker and their slogan, “Vorsprung durch Technik”, meaning “Progress through Technology” is more evident than ever in their line of R8’s. This is not to say the Italian engineers at Lamborghini didn’t do an absolutely marvelous job with Audi’s 5.2-liter V10 (yes you read that correctly), but they left so much on the table because they weren’t just going to let Audi have their cake and eat it too. It’s all-too-common knowledge that the R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo share an engine. However, what’s less commonly known or understood is the concept of de-tuning. Typically, when automotive manufacturers share power plants, the borrower will often get a de-tuned version to justify the price difference and fund the R&D of the originator. Changing as few items as possible to restrict performance is the name of the game, and the easiest way to achieve this is through ECU mapping. See Ferrari and Maserati as reference.

However, enthusiasts like the team here at Vivid Racing believe you should get what you pay for and we’re in the business of doing just that. Our VR Tuned ECU flash is designed to bring your V10 R8 out of the paddock and place you aggressively ahead of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. Producing 525hp and 391ft/lbs of torque was impressive, but our guy Dan said those were rookie numbers. So we filled the R8 with 91 octane and hit the dyno on a summer day and still managed to extract over 600hp and 439ftlbs of torque from this borrowed heart with no bolt on modifications. Once we paired our VR Tuned Flash with the BMC Carbon Racing Air Filter and Kreissieg F1 Valvetronic Exhaust, we found ourselves in Huracan Evo territory, so it’s pretty clear that your V10 wants to eat. If your R8 is looking for a meal fit for a king, VF Engineering is serving up Aventador level torque, at a fraction of the price of an Aventador without sacrificing the character of the R8, with their VF750 Roots-Style supercharger system, but that’s a story for a different track.
